This past Friday, May 11th, we had our first successful Volunteer night of 2012. On behalf of the AGC board we would like to thank all members who participated. Special thanks to Ian Size for helping organize the projects for the evening.

We would also like to thank Andre for bringing out the tractor to remove the wooden posts embedded in the ground and for cleaning up all the branches from Monday night’s wind storm.

We would like to advise the Members that Andre and his crew will be Aerating the greens between Monday, May 21st and Tuesday, May 22nd. According to golf-industry.com “Aeration is almost certainly the most important single operation in greenkeeping – rivaled only by mowing, which it predates in antiquity.  Few operations show greater or more varied benefits than aeration, though why we use this term when the introduction of air into soil is only one benefit from a list as long as your arm. This list includes relieving compaction; restructuring deflocculated soils; improving drainage; break down thatch by oxidation; correcting stagnation; building up a healthy aerobic soil micro-life; encouraging deeper rooting grasses and thus drought resistance; curing dry patch; helping the absorption of top dressings without layering; and increasing turf resilience.”

Just a quick reminder to all members to remember to fix all ball marks on the greens and to rake the sand traps after use. This helps us maintain Assiniboine to a higher standard.

Though the weather has not been what we would like, the club is still staying busy with tournament and member play!  Our Ladies League kicked off this past week and we will have over a 160 ladies in the league this year. Our Prime Rib dinner was a smashing success with over a 120 members and non-members enjoying dinner, thank you for the support! In that thought we have a few items and events upcoming that we like to have your support with.

* Mother’s Day Brunch is at the club from 11am to 5pm, with a cost of $12.95. Please make a reservation at 988-9317 to confirm your time so we can accommodate you properly.

* Friday night is going to be mixed couple night, if you don’t have a partner signup anyway and we will try and find you one!  First night will be May18th with Golf and dinner afterwards!

* This Friday night May 11th is VOLUNTEER night starting at 5pm, we are going to being pulling out a few dead trees around the club, planting shrubs, pulling weeds and trimming dead trees, preparing to plant flowers for the 2012 season. We want to upgrade the appearance of this facility and make ourselves proud of our club. Please call the proshop at 988-9313 to signup or put your name down on the bulletin board to volunteer!

Let’s make the 2012 season our best season ever and continue to make our golf course and facility a fun and enjoyable place to visit.

We have a few happening at the club in the next few weeks, so we are sending out some information to keep you updated:

**Men’s Opening is this weekend April 28th, it starts at 9am!! there will be dinner and prizes following the opening with a cost of $30. PLEASE call the proshop immediately to sign-up so we can determine final numbers for the draw and lunch following your game, your understanding and cooperation is appreciated to make the opening a success!

**The Cart Storage area is completed and the new fencing looks excellent! Anyone that hasn’t brought their cart in yet is welcome to do so!

**We will be having a Prime Rib dinner at the club on sunday May 6th starting at 6pm. The dinner will include Prime Rib and sauces, salads, potatoes, veggies and desert! All for $12.95, please call the restaurant to make a reservation at 988-9317.

**Mother’s Day Brunch will be May13th from 11am to 4pm, it will be a buffet including Scrambled eggs, hash browns, carved honey glazed ham, bacon, sausage, oven roasted potatoes, veggies, many different pasta and green salads, buns and deserts all for the price of $12.95.

**We are looking for volunteers to help take out and plant some new trees and shrubs, if interested please contact Glen in the proshop or at 988-9316.

The golf course will be open at 10am this Friday, Saturday and Sunday along with the restaurant! We welcome you to come meet our new Chefs this weekend and enjoy some of the breakfast and lunch specials! It will still be a somewhat limited menu but there will plenty to choose from. A few examples are

*  Chocolate chip & Banana pancakes
*  Assiniboine breakfast
*  Soup & Sandwich special and many other choices

Come enjoy breakfast or lunch and watch the Masters! The golf course itself is first come first serve right now and we will begin taking tee times next weekend! At that time we will have the Cart Storage area available as its been torn down and will be replaced early next week! Welcome to the 2012 Master’s Golf Pool.  This is a FREE pool for all current and aspiring members at the Assiniboine Golf Club.

To keep things interesting we have some great prizes including a $50 bar tab to the winner and sponsors prize packages for 2nd and 3rd.

Andre and his crew will work to get the course ready for a great summer and depending on the weather and temperatures hope to have the course fully open with-in the next 10 days or so.

Russ has done a ton of cleaning and organizing to help with the early start in the clubhouse, but the restaurant won’t be open until the day the course is. The pro-shop is preparing for an April 3rd opening for those who want to store their clubs and purchase merchandise. Many of our 2011 staff will be returning as well as a few new faces. A new chef has been hired and has brought some interesting new menu choices with him, so be sure to stop by early in the year to get a taste and introduce yourself.

I encourage everyone to stay off the greens and tee boxes until Andre and his staff have completed their spring start up and given the green light. This will reduce the ball marks and damages and allow the greens time to begin growing. The ground is still frozen and any traffic on the greens will damage them even more, which will mean an extended time line before they are open. As most of you know, the irrigation system won’t be operational until probably late April due to the frozen ground conditions which doesn’t help either.

I will send out another email when the course and clubhouse will be open for the season. Enjoy the early start and hopefully the weather will cooperate and we can be totally open in a week or so.
